TIES has been conducting several research and developmental programmes on environmental issues and various priority areas in tune with specified objectives. TIES aim to provide world class services in various fields including environment, sanitation as well as public health.
1. Thrust Areas
Research of TIES mainly evolve around three different environmental thrust fields which are among the main areas that currently have gained wide attention over other issues worldwide.
Pollution: Environmental pollution is one among the supreme problems that is increasing day by day causing grave damages to earth and its inhabitants. Addressing these problems from its root level has become the need of the hour and research programmes aimed at reducing pollution rate has been carried out around the globe. TIES work on different areas including, solid waste management, river pollution assessment, drinking water quality analysis, and developing educational tools on sanitation and hygienic lifestyle.
Biodiversity: With increasing urbanization and modernization, the richness of biodiversity that we were bestowed with, has been diminishing significantly. Considering the essentiality and importance in conserving biodiversity, many initiatives have been taken all around the globe. TIES with the sole aim of protecting biodiversity and imparting a change in people’s view about environment, has instigated many biodiversity conservation programmes and biodiversity awareness education programmes in Kerala. The campus being located in Western Ghats region adds tothe institute’s in house abilities in conducting scientific studies on Western Ghats, its ecological significance and diversity. The institute also provide assistance on biodiversity estimation, biodiversity impact assessment etc.
Eco-Friendly life style:Life now has become anti-environmental mainly due to the extent of modernization happened within a short period of time. After globalisation andincreased consumerism, our lifestyle is not in tune with nature and this indeed can cause serious repercussions, if not taken care of. In this era of increased environmental concerns, it is essential for every human being to contribute in protecting nature. A pioneer step towards that would be familiarising ourselves with eco-friendly life styles. TIES always stick with eco-friendly techniques with the TIES campus infrastructure being the best example. The main purpose of TIES with regard to eco-friendly living is to educate community in developing sustainable life style through different approaches. The institute also develops eco-friendly models and encourages modern generations to live closely with nature. Research is progressing in finding out better solutions through natural farming, energy and resource conservation, healthy foods and life style diseases.
2. Principle Fields
Currently, TIES conducts research work on three principle fields closely correlated with the thrust areas the institute focus on. TIES has set its own standard and excellence in all the research works conducted, and the support from experts within the organisation helped to achieve the quality in each and every work it undertake.
Bio Sciences: Main work of TIES under this category includeflora and fauna studies, its density and diversity estimation, as well as indices preparation of variety of species. Research on impact of pollution on flora and fauna is also been carried out at the institute.
Microbiology: TIES encourages various research and projects on microbiology and offers consultancy services to various organizations in this particular field. Isolation and characterization of micro-organisms from various sources including food, soil, water and waste materials is among the main work under this field. Apart from these, TIES also conducts anti microbial studies, enzyme profiling as well as DNA marker studies.
Environmental Engineering: TIES being an organization that focuses on environmental friendly measures encourages new innovative designs and techniques to solve current problems on environment and biodiversity. Some such initiatives from TIES include home composting machine, energy saving adaptations as well as production of different value added products.
3. Major Areas
Major areas of research at TIES includes Biodiversity, Wildlife studies, Ecosystem Management, Ethno Biological studies, Waste Management, Emerging Epidemics, Lifestyle diseases, Public health issues, River pollution and Toxicological studies, Sustainable Agriculture and Scientific Validation of traditional knowledge etc.Ongoing Projects Completed Projects
