Biosand Filters Provided Through IUCN Initiative

As part of TIES Project, Protection of freshwater ecosystems for the conservation of threatened species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India supported by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), bio-sand filters for drinking water purification were distributed at Bison Valley. This initiative, focused on conserving freshwater sources in the Munnar region, was inaugurated at the Komalikudi Anganwadi. Previously, water testing had been successfully conducted on a trial basis in the Anganwadis, public places, and homes in Komalikudi, Muttukad, and Changanacherrykad. 100 filters will be distributed through this initiative with a continuous monitoring system by which water quality will be monitored at regular intervals.

The distribution event was inaugurated by Mr. Ratheesh Kumar, the ward member of Bison Valley's sixth ward, and the first filter was handed over to Komalikudi resident Mr. Subramanian by Dr. Punnen Kurian, the Secretary of TIES. Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., Project Officer, delivered the welcome address, and Mr. Praful V. Panicker, Project Officer gave the vote of thanks. The event was attended by Komalikudi Anganwadi worker Bindu, TIES Head of Environmental Engineering Dr. Bindu B.K., Administrative Officer Sarath Babu N.B., and Project Officers Bechu Punnen Abraham & Neethu Nair M N and Jijomon P P, Graphic Designer, TIES.
