Freshwater conservation through students: TIES IUCN Seminar at GHSS Kallar Vattiyar

A seminar to raise awareness about freshwater habitat conservation in Munnar was held at GHSS Kallar Vattiyar. The seminar was conducted as part of TIES IUCN project, Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India. The seminar aimed to educate and engage students on the importance of preserving local freshwater ecosystems. This initiative is part of a series of awareness classes organized by TIES IUCN project to empower the community with knowledge about sustainable environmental practices.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mrs. Mini; Headmistress and Mrs. Bincy, Faculty, welcomed the attendees, reflecting the school’s enthusiasm for environmental issues. Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., IUCN Project Officer, lead an insightful session on the on the importance of freshwater habitats and the role of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).   The talk highlighted the ecological significance of Munnar’s rivers, lakes, and wetlands, focusing on the threats they face from pollution, habitat degradation, and climate change. He detailed conservation efforts targeting three species of odonates and two fish species, emphasizing their critical roles in maintaining ecological balance.

The seminar fostered vibrant discussions, allowing students and teachers to delve deeper into the challenges and solutions for freshwater conservation. Students expressed enthusiasm for learning about odonates and appreciated the clarification of complex concepts. Teachers valued the session for its educational depth and practical implications, noting its role in enhancing their understanding of local biodiversity and conservation.
