Future Guardians of Freshwater: TIES IUCN Seminar Energizes Students at Viswadeepthi CMI Public School

As part of the TIES’s IUCN project, “Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India,” a one-day seminar was held at Viswadeepthi CMI Public School in Adimaly. The seminar focused on educating students about the vital importance of conserving local freshwater ecosystems and is part of an ongoing series designed to equip the community with essential knowledge on sustainable environmental practices.

Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., Project Officer, led the session on the Conservation of Freshwater Habitats. The seminar covered the rich biodiversity of freshwater habitats and current conservation efforts in Munnar. He emphasized the important role that students can play in environmental protection and encouraged their active involvement.

Mrs. Deepa Thomas, Senior Teacher (HST Maths), inaugurated the session, stressing the importance of raising awareness about freshwater conservation among the youth. The event was chaired by Mrs. Reshma Krishna, Librarian and HST Computer Science. The seminar engaged 100 students from classes 7, 10, and 11. Mrs. Akhila (HST Maths) and Mrs. Anjumol (HST PET) also offered their felicitations. The seminar was coordinated by Mr. Praful V. Panicker, Project Officer, and Mr. Bechu Punnen, Project Assistant. The programme was supported by IUCN.
