Naalumanikkattu Shines as Kerala's New Green Tourism Centre, Championing Sustainability and Culture

2024-11-04

The scenic locale of Naalumanikkattu, celebrated for its dedication to environmental conservation and cleanliness, has been honored with the Green Tourism Centre designation. This recognition was awarded by the Nava Keralam Mission, an innovative initiative by the Government of Kerala aimed at addressing pressing social issues. The Mission selected over 60 locations across the state, evaluated on more than 20 criteria, with the official state-level announcement made on November 1, 2024.

In a ceremony held at the Manarcad Grama Panchayat office, Panchayat President Mr. K.C. Biju presented the certificate to representatives of Naalumanikkattu, including Dr. Punnen Kurian, President of the M.E.B. Residents' Association, and Treasurer Mr. K.K. Mathew Kolath. Mr. Biju praised the community’s collective efforts to transform once-littered roadsides—previously marred by plastic and other waste—into an inspiring model of cleanliness.

Naalumanikkattu is committed to preserving local food traditions and cultural heritage, with the Food Safety Authority’s Clean Street Food program set to launch here soon, further enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination. The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) serves as the technical partner for the project. This village roadside eco-tourism initiative is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, promoting eco-friendly tourism, community-driven environmental conservation, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Panchayat Assistant Secretary Mr. Binoy P.S., along with Haritha Keralam Mission resource persons Ms. Shamla C.A. and Ms. Shefi John, also spoke at the event. In addition to Naalumanikkattu, other locations in Kottayam District, such as Illikkal Kallu and Mango Meadows, received Green Tourism Centre recognition.
