2024-07-10

Students, teachers, and staff of Carmelagiri CMI Public School in Mattupetty, Munnar, learned new and important information about their residential location: a large number of fish, amphibians, and other freshwater organisms in their area belong to the IUCN threatened category. The seminar, conducted by TIES as part of the IUCN-supported project titled "Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar," sensitized the school community to the importance of conserving freshwater habitats, which are part of a biodiversity hotspot and world heritage site.

The seminar drew a significant turnout, with 100 students from Classes 7 and 8 in attendance. Mrs. Lakshmi, a teacher at Carmelagiri CMI Public School, welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Beaula Jahnsi Rani, the Staff Secretary, delivered the Presidential address, and Rev. Fr. Paul Kadamkulathil, the school's Principal, inaugurated the seminar. In his inspiring message, Rev. Fr. Paul emphasized the crucial role of youth in environmental conservation.

Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., Project Officer of the TIES IUCN Project, led the seminar. He enlightened participants about freshwater habitats, the organisms associated with these environments, and ongoing conservation initiatives in Munnar. The seminar underscored the critical role students play in conservation efforts, urging proactive engagement.

Mr. Bechu Punnen Abraham, Project Assistant, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the TIES IUCN Project. Mr. Praful V. Panicker, Project Officer, managed media coverage of the event. The informative session received enthusiastic responses from students for its relevance and educational value.
