Advancing Freshwater Conservation Awareness: TIES IUCN Seminar at GHSS Kunjithanny

In continuation of its commitment to raising awareness about freshwater habitat conservation in Munnar, the TIES IUCN project conducted its fifth seminar at Government Higher Secondary School Kunjithanny on August 7, 2024. The seminar aimed to educate and engage students on the importance of preserving local freshwater ecosystems. This initiative is part of a series of awareness classes organized by TIES IUCN to empower the community with knowledge about sustainable environmental practices.

The seminar commenced with an inaugural session where Mrs. Sreedevi V.N., HST Biology, extended a warm welcome to the attendees. Mrs. Priji P.P., Headmistress in charge, delivered the presidential address, emphasizing the significance of freshwater conservation and highlighting the recent Wayanad landslide as a poignant example of the need to protect nature. Mr. Joseph Paul, senior assistant, officially inaugurated the seminar with an inaugural address. A total of 100 students from classes 7, 8, and 9 actively participated in the seminar.

Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., Project Officer for the TIES IUCN Project, led an enlightening seminar focused on freshwater habitats, their diverse ecosystems, and ongoing conservation efforts in Munnar. Stressing the vital role of students in environmental conservation, the session urged active involvement. Expressing gratitude on behalf of the TIES IUCN Project, Mr. Bechu Punnen Abraham, Project Assistant, delivered the vote of thanks. Mr. Praful V. Panicker, Project Officer managing media coverage, ensured the event's outreach. The seminar resonated well with students, who appreciated its informative content and relevance to local conservation challenges.
