Awareness Program on Improved Cultivation Practices of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants

2025-03-05

CSIR-CIMAP organized a one-day awareness program on Improved Cultivation Practices of Important Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) in association with Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) conducted. The session was led by Dr. Yogendra N D, Senior Scientist & State Nodal Officer (Kerala), Aroma Mission, CSIR-CMAP, and focused on sustainable cultivation techniques to enhance productivity and quality in MAPs.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Bindhu B K, Head of the Environmental Engineering Division at TIES, who emphasized the growing demand for medicinal and aromatic plants and the need for scientific interventions to maximize their potential. A total of 65 participants, including students, farmers, agricultural officers, advocates, and researchers, attended the program, reflecting the widespread interest in integrating MAPs into sustainable agricultural practices.

Dr. Yogendra provided valuable insights into scientific cultivation methods, post-harvest management, and the economic opportunities associated with MAPs, along with an overview of the Aroma Mission of the CSIR. The interactive sessions allowed participants to engage with experts, address their queries, and explore the role of MAPs in biodiversity conservation and the herbal industry.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, remarked, "Scientific knowledge is the key to unlocking the full potential of medicinal and aromatic plants. Through initiatives like these, we aim to bridge the gap between research and practice, empowering communities with sustainable solutions." He further emphasized, "By integrating improved cultivation practices, we can enhance both ecological sustainability and economic opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs alike."

The program reinforced TIES' commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural practices and supporting the conservation of indigenous medicinal plant species. With increasing awareness and adoption of scientifically-backed cultivation techniques, initiatives like these contribute significantly to enhancing livelihoods, supporting ecological sustainability, and boosting the herbal economy. Mr. Anathapadmanabhan A K, Agricultural Officer, shared his valuable insights and provisions in the field.  The programme was coordinated by Sarath Babu N B, Abhirami K P, Jijomon P P, Lijitha, Raga, and Anoopa Mathews from TIES.
