Human Resource & Institutional Policy Framework

The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) is a professional, autonomous environmental research institution committed to environmental education, capacity building, ecological research, and community development.

To sustain our mission, we maintain a workplace that is legally compliant, equitable, and driven by scientific integrity. Our comprehensive Human Resource and Statutory Compliance Policy ensures a safe and productive environment for our scientists, administrative staff, project assistants, interns, and volunteers.

1. Code of Conduct and Ethical Governance

TIES operates under a strict Zero Tolerance Policy to prevent and eliminate any form of bribery, corruption, or unethical behavior. We mandate absolute transparency and scientific integrity in all research initiatives, including biodiversity surveys and microbial evaluations.

This ethical framework applies to all staff, volunteers, and external partners. Confidential reporting mechanisms are in place to protect individuals who report misconduct.

2. Diversity, Equity, and Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH)

We believe that all employees and associates have the right to be treated with dignity. Discrimination based on sex, race, religion, or any other protected characteristic is strictly prohibited.

Our robust Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) policy applies to all staff, temporary workers, contractors, volunteers, and trainees.

We maintain an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to conduct formal inquiries and resolve grievances confidentially within strict timelines.

3. Occupational and Fieldwork Safety

Fieldwork Safety:

  • Strict adherence to safety protocols during ecosystem deployment
  • Weather monitoring and carrying emergency kits
  • Following a "Leave Zero Footprint" environmental ethic
  • Respecting local communities and obtaining permission before documentation

Laboratory Biosafety:

  • Compliance with biosafety standards in Velloor campus laboratories
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

4. Fair Employment and Statutory Compliance

TIES complies fully with India's central Labor Codes and Kerala state employment regulations. We ensure fair compensation aligned with updated minimum wage directives.

  • Employees' Provident Fund (EPF)
  • Employees' State Insurance (ESIC)
  • Statutory leave: Earned, Casual, Sick, and Maternity leave

5. Volunteer and Internship Engagement

TIES supports emerging environmental professionals through programs like:

  • TIES Student Internship Programme (TSP)
  • TIES Research Training Programme (TRTP)

All engagements are governed by formal agreements outlining roles, expectations, and intellectual property rights.
