“A training that equipped us with the basics” was how one participant described the recent fish farming training held at TIES. As part of TIES' capacity-building initiatives, the program aimed to empower the community with fundamental knowledge of aquaculture. Thirteen participants from various sectors attended the session, which was led by Mr. Surendran Nair, retired Deputy Director of Fisheries.
The training covered key aspects of aquaculture, including different production systems, backyard fish farming for home use, and essential fish health management practices. Fish farming at the household level not only enhances food security but also serves as a sustainable source of nutrition and additional income. An open forum allowed participants to discuss their queries about fish farming, fostering an interactive learning environment. Additionally, Sarath Babu, NEO, TIES, guided the attendees in preparing a low-cost water filtration system for aquaculture setups. The session concluded with a valedictory function led by Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Head of Environmental and Anthropocene Studies, TIES, who also interacted with the participants.
