“Mushrooms for the first time!” exclaimed Dhruv Krishna N. S., a 1st-grade student from Sudarsanam Central School, Aranmula, as he marveled at the curious fungi during a hands-on training session. Dhruv was one among 28 enthusiastic students who took part in a unique mushroom farming experience, organized under the Enjoy Learning Skills programme of TIES.
The one-day field-cum-lab study programme, held in collaboration with Sudarsanam Central School, Aranmula, and Malgudis International School, Chengannur, introduced students to the fascinating world of sustainable farming. Designed to nurture curiosity and equip young learners with practical knowledge, the session focused on the essentials of mushroom cultivation.
Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, kickstarted the day with an introductory talk on “The Science of Mushroom Farming,” unraveling the biology and life cycle of mushrooms. The session sparked curiosity and laid the groundwork for deeper learning.
Following this, Ms. Arya Shaji, Project Assistant at TIES, led an immersive session on “Mushroom Cultivation Techniques.” Students explored different mushroom species, methods of cultivation, and environmental requirements. Ms. Arya also demonstrated spawn preparation, bed setting, and shared insights into disease management and preventive care for a healthy harvest.
By the end of the session, students prepared their own mushroom beds and many expressed confidence in applying their new skills at home—with some even dreaming of launching their own mini mushroom farms.
The training not only introduced students to an innovative farming practice but also inspired a greater awareness of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The event was seamlessly coordinated by Ms. Remya Sekhar R., Ms. Sumi T. R., and Ms. Anu Gopinathan from the participating schools, along with the support of Mr. Sarath Babu N. B. (Nature Education Officer), Ms. Anoopa Mathews (PRO), Ms. Raga R., and Mr. Jijomon P. P. (Graphic Designer) from TIES.
