“It was a really good experience. I learned so many new and interesting things about bees and birds, and also understood better how we can protect and care for nature,” shared Lekshmi Raj, a student of Syrian Jacobite Public School, Thiruvalla, after taking part in Enjoy Learning—a one-day field- and lab-based educational programme organised by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES)
Designed to spark curiosity and build an eco-conscious mindset, the programme introduced students to the importance of biodiversity conservation through interactive sessions and hands-on learning. The experience encouraged young minds to think critically about sustainable living and environmental responsibility.
Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, led an engaging and thought-provoking session, inspiring students to reflect on sustainability and the urgent need to conserve ecosystems in the face of increasing human pressures. The learning continued with a guided nature walk across the TIES campus, where students explored eco-friendly architecture, sustainable practices, and the role of native species in maintaining ecological balance. Mr. Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer at TIES, introduced students to apiculture, highlighting its ecological value and potential as a sustainable livelihood. The day concluded with a visit to the TIES Laboratory, where Ms. Anju, Lab In-Charge, familiarised students with laboratory facilities, scientific instruments, and the waste management practices followed at TIES.
The programme was smoothly coordinated by Mr. Sreenadh and Mrs. Princy Mathews, faculties from Syrian Jacobite Public School, Thiruvalla and Mr. Jijomon P. P., Ms. Megha M. M., and Ms. Surya S. K. from TIES. A total of 44 students actively participated in this enriching learning experience.
