Idukki District, is home to several tribal communities, the second largest in Kerala, including the Mannan, Muthuvan, Malayan, and Mala-arrian tribes. Among these settlements is Kurathikudi, located within the dense forests of Idukki at an elevation of approximately 3000 feet above sea level. This remote community, belonging to the Muthuvan tribe, is located at Kurathikkudy, a hamlet 16 km. away from Mankulam, in Adimali Grama Panchayath.
To promote biodiversity conservation, TIES, through the IUCN Save Our Species project titled Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India, organized a “Colour to Conserve” coloring competition at MGLC, Kurathikudi. This initiative aimed to engage young minds in protecting endangered species and freshwater habitats in Munnar, recognizing the valuable role that local tribes, closely connected with nature, can play in conservation efforts.
Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., Project Officer for the TIES-IUCN project, led an engaging session on freshwater habitat conservation, highlighting biodiversity threats in Munnar and ongoing efforts to safeguard vulnerable species.
The competition saw 24 students showcase their artistic talents, with Mr. Muraleedharan P.K., Mrs. Manju S., and Mr. Praful V. Panicker from TIES serving as judges. Mistress Krishnanjali won first place, while Master Indran and Master Nandini took second and third places, respectively. Students responded positively, noting that the experience deepened their understanding of conservation. This creative initiative encouraged them to form a personal connection with the conservation of freshwater ecosystems, fostering a lasting appreciation for environmental protection.
