In a vibrant move towards promoting biodiversity and environmental education, the Butterfly Garden at the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Kottayam campus was officially handed over, marking a meaningful step in urban ecological restoration.
More than just an aesthetic addition, the butterfly garden is a carefully planned ecological initiative designed to support pollinators and raise public awareness about conservation. Planted with a variety of nectar-rich native species and host plants, the garden serves as a safe haven for butterflies across their life cycle—offering breeding grounds, food sources, and shelter. Informational boards placed throughout the garden educate visitors on butterfly species, food plants, and metamorphosis, transforming the space into a dynamic learning environment.
This impactful project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of DLSA Kottayam, the Social Forestry Division, Kottayam, and the CSR Wing of KIMS Healthcare and was implemented by Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES).
The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of judicial officers, environmentalists and students. Highlights included an eco-walk, butterfly observation activities, and interactive talks on the ecological importance of pollinators and green urban spaces. The event reinforced the garden’s role as a “living classroom” where visitors of all ages can engage with nature firsthand.
Distinguished attendees included Praveen Kumar G., Secretary and Civil Judge (Senior Division), DLSA Kottayam; Arun Krishna, Section Officer, DLSA; Vidhya, Nodal Officer; Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary, TIES; and Jijomon P P, Graphic Designer, TIES. Their presence and support underscored the shared commitment to sustainability and environmental education.
The Butterfly Garden at DLSA Kottayam stands as a testament to the power of collaborative action in fostering ecological resilience and community engagement—one fluttering wing at a time.
