Conservation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are deeply interconnected, as the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity supports several SDG targets. Conservation efforts not only balance ecosystem health with human well-being but also build resilience against climate impacts and secure resources for future generations. Sensitizing young children is a promising way toward conservation. In alignment with these goals, TIES organized a coloring competition at Government UP School, Letchmi, Munnar, under the IUCN Save Our Species project titled “Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India.” Part of the “Colour to Conserve” initiative, this event aimed to inspire young students to actively engage in protecting endangered species and freshwater habitats in Munnar.
The event commenced with Ms. Sreedevi M., a faculty member, presiding over the session, while Mrs. Josephine Jhansi Rani R., the Headmistress, delivered a motivating keynote address. The competition was judged by Ms. Daisy Rani, faculty member; Mr. Ajith VU, Office Assistant at GUPS Letchmi; and Mr. Nihal Hussain from TIES. Prizes were awarded to the top three participants: Kumari Izekkiyammal earned first place, Kumari Niranjana took second, and Master Shanker placed third. A total of 13 enthusiastic students from classes 5 to 7 participated, supported by teaching and non-teaching staff.
Mr. Bechu Punnen Abraham, Project Assistant for the TIES-IUCN project, led an engaging session on freshwater habitat conservation, highlighting the biodiversity threats in Munnar and ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable species. He also encouraged students to take an active role in conservation. Coordinated by Mr. Praful V. Panicker, Project Officer for TIES, the event was well-received by students, who expressed enthusiasm about learning through this hands-on experience and left inspired to contribute to conservation efforts in their community.
