Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), in collaboration with the IUCN, recently organized a one-day workshop on the "Conservation of Freshwater Habitats in Munnar" at GHSS Vaguvarrai. This event, held in partnership with the School Social Service Scheme (SSSS) of Vaguvarrai GHSS, brought together 31 dedicated volunteers. The workshop was a crucial component of the "Protection of Freshwater Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India" project, supported by the IUCN.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Selvin, Headmaster of GHSS Vaguvarrai, who emphasized the vital role students play in environmental conservation efforts. Project Officer Mr. Praful V. Panicker welcomed the participants, while faculty member Ms. Manimeghala presided over the session.
Mr. Nihal Hussain T.P., Project Officer, provided training on key issues such as biodiversity conservation, with a focus on identifying odonates and fish species, understanding their diversity, and recognizing the threats they face. He also discussed waste management provisions and provided updates on the ongoing IUCN project in Munnar. Additionally, Project Assistant Mr. Bechu Punnen Abraham facilitated team-building activities designed to promote collaboration through interactive exercises.
This was followed by a group discussion were volunteers engaged on various environmental topics and presented their findings. The presentations were evaluated by Ms. Manimeghala and Ms. Radhika. Kumari Kavya, the SSSS Leader, received the award for the best team on behalf of her group from Mr. Selvin. The event concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participants, acknowledging their active participation and contributions.
