Kole farmers, like those in other sectors, are under significant pressure due to climate change. Studies reveal that urban expansion around wetlands, rising salinity, excessive agrochemical use, dwindling mangrove cover, and increasing pollution are endangering the Kole fields. This puts rice—the staple food of Kerala—at risk, as climate change exacerbates these challenges.
On October 26, 2024, an orientation workshop on climate-resilient paddy farming protocols was held in Irinjalakkuda, Thrissur. Conducted by TIES in partnership with the Muriad Kayal Thekkepadam Karshaka Samithi, the workshop is part of a NABARD-funded initiative titled “Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Rice Cultivation in Kerala and the Development of Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies.” This project seeks to address critical issues in rice farming by identifying and prioritizing farmers' concerns and developing a climate-smart farming protocol based on effective mitigation and adaptation practices.
The workshop was presided over by Ms. Nisha Ajaykumar, Secretary of the Samithi, with support from Vice President PR Vijayan, Treasurer Jinu, and 15 local farmers. Ms. Habi Sherin, the Project Coordinator, presented the newly developed climate-resilient paddy farming protocol, while Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, introduced TIES and outlined the workshop’s goals.
Following the presentation, an engaging discussion allowed farmers to share their thoughts and concerns. They agreed to review the protocol with their peers and provide feedback to the Samithi in the coming days. The workshop concluded with a commitment to collaborate on implementing these practices in the community and refreshments for all attendees. Project Assistant Mr. Aditya Sabu coordinated the event.
