Enhancing Household-Level Poultry Farming Skills: Empowering Sustainable Backyard Rearing

Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) organized a one-day comprehensive training session on poultry farming, focusing on best practices for home based chicken rearing. Designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills, the session covered key aspects of poultry farm management, including breed selection, housing, nutrition, health care, and sustainable farming methods at household level. Participants were introduced to different chicken breeds, their unique characteristics, and specific care requirements to optimize growth and productivity. Detailed discussions were held on various farming techniques as well as feeding schedules, nutritional needs, and the importance of balanced diets in ensuring the health and well-being of poultry.

In addition to farm management, the training emphasized the significance of hygiene, waste disposal, and environmental control to maintain disease-free conditions. Essential vaccination protocols and disease prevention strategies were also covered, equipping attendees with the knowledge to manage poultry health effectively. Practical demonstrations of cage models provided hands-on insights into housing structures, and an interactive open session allowed participants to clarify doubts and seek expert advice. The training was led by Dr. Sajeev Kumar, Chief Veterinary Officer, Kottayam, and Sarath Babu N B, Nature Education Officer at TIES, who shared their expertise and guided discussions. Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, welcomed the audience by highlighting the significance of household-level poultry farming and the role of capacity building in promoting sustainable and self-sufficient farming practices. A total of 12 participants from diverse backgrounds attended, reflecting a growing interest in sustainable poultry farming.
