From Classroom to Cultivation: Pallikoodam Students Learn Mushroom Farming

2024-09-07

Joanna, a 10th-grade student at Pallikoodam School, Kalathipady, Kottayam, eagerly awaits the sprouting of her mushroom bed, hoping for a bountiful harvest. Like Joanna, 37 other students have now embarked on their journey into the world of mushroom farming. The school, in collaboration with TIES, organized yet another enriching one-day field-cum-lab study program titled "Enjoy Learning Skills" for 10th-grade students. The program aimed to equip students with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable farming.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, kicked off the day with a session on “Introduction to Mushroom Farming,” where he explained the biology and growth processes of mushrooms.

Ms. Anju Ajikumar, Laboratory Manager at TIES, followed with a comprehensive session on “Mushroom Cultivation Techniques.” She provided an in-depth overview of mushroom farming, covering different species, cultivation methods, spawn preparation, and the ideal environmental conditions for successful growth. Ms. Arya Shaji, Project Assistant, further elaborated on bed preparation, common mushroom diseases, and precautionary measures to ensure a healthy crop.

Feedback from students indicated they now feel confident in starting their own mushroom cultivation projects, with some even considering the idea of establishing a small mushroom farm at their school.

The training offered students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of sustainable farming practices and instilled a strong sense of environmental responsibility.

The event was coordinated by Ms. Swapna Chacko, Ms. Reba Varghese, Ms. Celine Mathew, and Mr. Bobby P. Mathew, faculty members of Pallikoodam School; along with Mr. Sarath Babu N B, Nature Education Officer, Ms. Anoopa Mathews, PRO and Mr. Jijomon P. P., Graphic Designer at TIES. A total of 38 students participated in the training.
