From Classroom to Farming: Excelsior School Students Learned Ornamental Fish Farming

2024-10-08

Haya Sajeer, a 7th grade student at Excelsior School, Kottayam, eagerly awaits the sprouting of her mushroom bed, hoping for a bountiful harvest. Like Haya, 50 other students have now embarked on their journey into the world of ornamental fish farming. The program aimed to equip students with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable farming. The  training was conducted under Enjoy Learning Skills programme of TIES.

The training, led by Mr. C.K. Rajan, retired Deputy Director of Fisheries, and Mr. Sarath Babu N.B., Nature Education Officer at TIES, covered various topics such as the types of ornamental fish, breeding techniques, nutrition, and aquarium setup. The interactive session captured the attention of 50 students and 3 teachers, creating an engaging environment for knowledge-sharing.

This initiative is part of TIES’ broader mission to equip students with practical skills for sustainable living. The training not only introduced participants to ornamental fish culture but also deepened their understanding of environmental conservation and the interdependence between humans and nature.

By working together, TIES and Excelsior School aim to instill a conservation mindset through innovative activities like the ornamental fish culture training. This ongoing collaboration serves as a platform for developing environmentally conscious citizens equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for leading a sustainable lifestyle.

The session was coordinated by Ms. Simi Joseph, Ms. Saramma Mathew, and Ms. Radhika Nair., faculty members from Excelsior School, alongside Ms. Anoopa Mathews, Ms. Abhirami K.P, Ms. Varada M and Mr. Jijomon P.P. from TIES.
