“A good support to develop and maintain fish farming unit”— exclaimed
by Mr. Issac George about the recent fish farming training organized at Tropical
Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES). Conducted as part of TIES’ ongoing
capacity-building initiatives, the program aimed to equip community members
with essential knowledge in aquaculture.
Twenty Three participants from diverse backgrounds took part
in the session, which was led by Mr. Surendran Nair, retired Deputy Director of
Fisheries. The training introduced key aspects of aquaculture, covering
different production systems, backyard fish farming for household needs, and
fundamental fish health management practices.
Household-level fish farming was highlighted as a means to
enhance food security while serving as a sustainable source of nutrition and
supplemental income. An open forum encouraged participants to share their
questions and experiences, fostering an interactive learning environment.
As a hands-on component, Ms. Anoopa Mathews, PRO, TIES,
demonstrated how to prepare a low-cost water filtration system for aquaculture
setups. The training was supported by Ms. Sruthy Shaji and Augustine Joseph.
