Inauguration of Olameyal Festival at the Bird Watching Study Centre, Kadappoor

As part of the River Linking Project, the Wind Park Society, Kattachira Trench Tourism, in collaboration with the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), has established a Bird Watching Study Centre aimed at promoting biodiversity conservation, ecological research, and nature-based tourism in the region.

The proposed building will house a camp shed, office facility, and an interpretation centre, all designed in harmony with local traditions. The shed is being constructed using traditional materials such as coconut wood, arecanut wood, and elephant palm leaves. The leaf thatching, a time-honoured practice, is carried out as a community celebration with active participation from local residents.This collective tradition gives the festival its name — Ola Meyal Festival, the Leaf Thatching Festival, celebrating heritage, sustainability, and community bonding.

The ‘Olameyal Festival’ of the Bird Watching Study Centre was formally inaugurated on 3 January 2025 by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES. In his inaugural address, Dr. Kurian highlighted the transformative potential of the project, stating that upon completion, it would significantly change the socio-environmental landscape of Kadappoor and Koodallur, and serve as a model for sustainable development at the national level by integrating conservation, community participation, and eco-tourism.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Sri. P. T. Somasekharan, Secretary of the Society. Smt. Teena Maliyekkal, Member of Kidangoor Grama Panchayath, who delivered the presidential address and emphasized the importance of grassroots initiatives in strengthening environmental stewardship and local livelihoods.

Sri. E. S. Biju, Municipal Councillor, Ettumanoor, delivered the felicitation address, along with Sri. Baby Joseph, President, Co-operative Bank, and Smt. Ambika Sukumaran, Former Grama Panchayath Member, who appreciated the collaborative efforts behind the initiative and its long-term benefits for the community. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by Sri. Ajayan, Member of Kanakkari Grama Panchayath.

Following the formal proceedings, payasam was served to all attendees, marking the occasion in a spirit of celebration and community bonding.
