Inspiring Young Minds: A Day of Eco-Friendly Learning for Students of Netaji Higher Secondary School, Paramadom

“Learning in an eco-friendly classroom is something different,” remarked a student from Netaji Higher Secondary School, Pramadom, after participating in TIES’ one-day field and lab study program, Enjoy Learning. Designed to enhance students’ knowledge of biodiversity conservation and foster an eco-friendly lifestyle, the program offered a blend of engaging sessions and hands-on activities that inspired environmental awareness.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, delivered an insightful session titled Eco-Friendly Lifestyle: Sustainable Solutions to Environmental Issues. He highlighted the importance of adopting nature-friendly habits and emphasized the urgency of preserving the planet’s ecosystems amid today’s human-centric challenges.

Following the session, students embarked on a nature walk across the TIES campus. The walk provided an immersive experience in sustainable living practices and showcased eco-friendly architectural designs. Students explored the local biodiversity, learning about the critical role native species play in maintaining ecological balance. The activity also introduced them to apiculture and aquaculture, with Mr. Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer, explaining their ecological and economic significance.

Practical lab activities further enriched the program. Ms. Anju Ajikumar, Laboratory Manager, guided students in using instruments for water quality analysis and provided hands-on experience with compound and stereomicroscopes to examine specimens.

The day concluded with a building tour led by Ms. Anoopa Mathews, PRO of TIES. Students explored the campus’s eco-friendly, low-cost, and energy-efficient architecture and learned about various home composting techniques, offering practical insights into sustainable living.

The Enjoy Learning program provided a holistic, experiential learning opportunity, leaving the students inspired and equipped to embrace eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

The training was coordinated by Dr. Sunil Kumar, Manager, Ms. Anitha Kumari T M., Ms. Deepa V and Ms. Geethu T R faculties from the school, along with Mr. Jijomon P P, Ms. Abhirami K P and Ms. Abirsha from TIES. The programme was attended by 32 students.
