Kadappoor Bird Survey Highlights Local Community's Role in Biodiversity Conservation

2024-08-12

The Kadappoor Bird Survey, an important event highlighting the region's avian diversity, was recently held in the Kadappoor, Kanakkari Panchayat of Kottayam district. This extensive survey documented a remarkable 60 species of birds, encompassing a wide variety of avifauna, including numerous water birds. Conducted across three distinct locations, Cheenaghirichal, Kozhichal and Vattukalamchaal, within the panchayat, the survey underscored the ecological richness of the area.

The event drew over 50 participants from various sectors of the community. Local community members played a significant role, showcasing the power of community involvement in environmental initiatives. Alongside them were researchers, students, and employed professionals, all contributing their expertise and enthusiasm. This diverse participation underscored the inclusive nature of the survey and highlighted the collective commitment to biodiversity conservation.

The Kadappoor Bird Survey was not an isolated effort but was intricately linked with the broader environmental objectives of the Meenachil-Meenatharayar and Kodur River Relinking Project. This project aims to rejuvenate local water bodies and enhance the ecological balance of the region. The survey provided valuable data that will support these goals, offering insights into the bird populations that depend on these water bodies for their survival.

The survey was a testament to the effectiveness of community-driven initiatives. By involving local residents directly in conservation activities, the event fostered a deeper connection between people and their natural surroundings. It also served as an educational experience, particularly for the students who participated, offering them hands-on learning about bird species, their habitats, and the importance of preserving biodiversity.

Overall, the Kadappoor Bird Survey was a successful example of how community participation and scientific research can come together to achieve significant environmental goals. It highlighted the vital role that local communities play in conservation efforts and demonstrated the positive impact of collaborative projects like the Meenachil-Meenatharayar and Kodur River Relinking Project. Dr Punnen Kurian, Dr Abraham Samuel K, Ajayakumar M N, Tony Antony and Sarath Babu N B from TIES; Ambika Sukumaran, Kanakari Panchayat Presiden; Sasi Cheriyaplackil, Sasthra Sahithya Parishith President; Pitty Somashekaran, Biju Purapottil, Diwakaran and former panchayat members, led the survey.
