Kole farmers of Thrissur adopting Climate Resilient paddy farming practices

An orientation workshop introducing the climate-resilient paddy farming protocol was held on October 14, 2024, in Kodannur, Thrissur. The workshop was conducted by TIES in collaboration with the Kodannur Kole Farming Cooperative Society, this event is part of the NABARD-funded project titled “Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Rice Cultivation in Kerala and the Development of Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies.” The project aims to address key challenges in rice farming in Kerala by identifying and prioritizing the issues faced by farmers, ultimately developing a climate-friendly farming protocol based on the best mitigation and adaptation practices of successful rice farmers.

The workshop was presided over by Mr. Pazhore Appukuttan, President of the Samithi, and Ms. Raji, the Secretary of the Samithi, with participation from 33 local farmers. Ms. Habi Sherin, Project Coordinator, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the newly developed climate-resilient paddy farming protocol, while Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, provided an introduction to the institute and outlined the objectives of the meeting. 

An engaging discussion followed the presentation, with farmers actively sharing their thoughts and concerns. They agreed to further discuss the protocol with their peers and provide feedback to the Samithi in the coming days. The meeting concluded with a commitment to collaborate on implementing these practices in the local community, followed by refreshments for all attendees. The workshop was coordinated by Project Assistant Mr. Aditya Sabu.

A previous orientation workshop was conducted in Kottayam in collaboration with the Kelakkari Vattakkayal Nellulpadaka Samithi.
