The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) conducted a teacher training session for the faculty and staff of Syrian Jacobite Public School, Thiruvalla, under the Enjoy Teaching Programme. The session was attended by 56 participants, including both teaching and non-teaching staff, and focused on biodiversity conservation and sustainable home practices.
The training was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, and Dr. Nelson P. Abraham, Vice President of TIES. Through interactive discussions, expert insights, and real-world applications, participants explored the importance of local biodiversity, eco-friendly lifestyle choices, and sustainable household practices. The session also emphasized the role of educators in fostering environmental awareness among students, encouraging them to adopt responsible and sustainable habits.
As part of the program, a building and nature walk was conducted by Sarath Babu N. B., Nature Education Officer, TIES, and Anoopa Mathews, PRO, TIES. It was aimed to provide participants with insights into native flora, eco-friendly architecture, apiculture, pisciculture and home waste management. Ms. Aji Alex, Principal of the School, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of integrating environmental education into school activities.
The session was effectively coordinated by Mohanan Cheriyan and Abraham Chacko, Secretary and Joint Secretary of the School, along with Jijomon P. P., Aditya P. Sabu, Habi Sherin, Nidhi Chand, Cimila Sibichen, Jebin K. Geemon, and Raga S. of TIES.
By equipping educators with the knowledge and skills to promote environmental sustainability, TIES continues to strengthen its mission of conservation and ecological awareness, empowering schools to integrate sustainability into their curriculum and daily practices.
