Paddy cultivation in Kerala is currently facing significant challenges due to climate change, the emergence of diseases, and rising costs of machinery and inputs. In response, an orientation workshop for paddy farmers was held in Penakam, Thrissur, focusing on climate-resilient rice cultivation practices. This initiative was organized by TIES in collaboration with the Penakam Punchakkol Padasekhara Nellulpadaka Samithi.
This workshop is part of a series being conducted in Kottayam, Palakkad, and Alappuzha under the NABARD-funded project titled “Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Rice Cultivation in Kerala and the Development of Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies.” The project aims to tackle key challenges in rice farming by identifying the issues faced by farmers and developing climate-friendly farming protocols based on effective mitigation and adaptation practices.
Ms. Habi Sherin, Project Coordinator, opened the meeting by highlighting the importance of community engagement in agricultural practices. Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, provided an introduction to the institute and outlined its goals in promoting sustainable agriculture. Following this, Ms. Habi presented an overview of the challenges local farmers are encountering and introduced strategies to enhance productivity and resilience in their farming methods. Amala, the Agricultural Officer of Mullassery Krishibhavan, shared valuable insights on sustainable farming techniques, enriching the discussion.
Farmers actively participated in the conversation, sharing their experiences and concerns regarding the implementation of the proposed strategies. The event was coordinated by Project Assistant Mr. Aditya Sabu, who ensured smooth proceedings and facilitated effective communication among all attendees.
