Diljith, a 4th-grade student of Sudarsanam Central School, Aranmula, eagerly awaits the setup of his very own aquarium—a reflection of the curiosity and enthusiasm sparked through a unique training programme on ornamental fish culture. Alongside him, 38 students have embarked on this journey into the fascinating world of ornamental fish farming, gaining hands-on experience and practical skills for sustainable living.
Organized under the Enjoy Learning Skills programme of TIES, which is an engaging and interactive study package designed specifically for students from schools and colleges. This program is crafted to impart essential skills that empower students to observe, learn, and interact with nature in meaningful ways. The training was led by Mr. C.K. Rajan, retired Deputy Director of Fisheries. Covering topics such as the diversity of ornamental fish, breeding methods, nutrition, and aquarium setup, the interactive sessions engaged 39 students and 4 teachers, creating an inspiring space for shared learning and exploration.
A live demonstration was conducted on aquarium setup using pebbles, plants, filters, and other essentials, along with an introduction to various common ornamental fish species, and the testing of water pH using pH paper was also demonstrated.
The initiative forms part of TIES’ broader mission to nurture practical skills among students while fostering awareness of environmental conservation and the delicate balance between humans and nature. By introducing young learners to ornamental fish culture, the programme not only developed technical knowledge but also encouraged a deeper sense of responsibility toward sustainability.
The training was inaugurated by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, and was coordinated through the collaborative efforts of Ms. Radhika Krishnan, Ms. Renjitha R., Ms. Sreelatha K.S., and Ms. Remya Sekhar R. from Sudarsanam Central School, along with Ms. Anoopa Mathews, Ms. Vandana, and Mr. Jijomon P.P. from TIES. This joint effort by TIES and the school highlights the power of partnership in shaping environmentally conscious citizens for the future. As part of the programme, each student and faculty member was provided with a bowl and a fish along with certificates, enabling them to apply the training in a practical manner and fostering a sense of responsibility in nurturing and caring for living organisms .
