Promoting Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Farmers Workshop on Sustainable Rice Cultivation Held in Palakkad, the rice granary of Kerala

An orientation workshop for paddy farmers took place at Kattussery, Alathur, Palakkad, introducing climate-resilient rice cultivation practices. The workshop was organized by TIES in collaboration with the Koorodmann Padashekhara Samithi, Alathur. This event is part of a series of workshops being held in Kottayam, Thrissur, and Alappuzha under the NABARD-funded project titled “Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Rice Cultivation in Kerala and the Development of Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies.” The project seeks to address key challenges in rice farming by identifying farmers' issues and developing a climate-friendly farming protocol based on successful mitigation and adaptation practices.

Ms. Habi Sherin, Project Coordinator, delivered a detailed presentation on the newly developed climate-resilient paddy farming protocol which was developed in consultation with paddy farmers, agricultural officers, researchers, etc. Mr. Gouthaman, Secretary of the Samithi, presided over the meeting, stressing the importance of sustainable farming practices. Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, introduced the institute and outlined the objectives of the workshop. Ms. Shruthy, Alathur Agricultural Officer, and Mr. Anil P K, Agricultural Assistant also attended and provided valuable contributions to the session.

After the presentation, the farmers engaged in a productive discussion, sharing their experiences and suggestions. They collectively agreed to adopt the new protocol and integrate it into their farming practices. The workshop, attended by 25 farmers, demonstrated strong community support for climate-resilient agriculture. The session was coordinated by Project Assistant Mr. Aditya Sabu.
