Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) hosted an engaging screening of the award-winning documentary Saving Walden's World, directed by renowned environmental advocate and filmmaker Mr. Jim Merkel. Held on November 8, 2024, at Grove Hall, this event attracted students, researchers, faculty, and community members, offering them an inspiring exploration of women-led solutions to biodiversity challenges and the sixth extinction.
The event was presided over by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, and inaugurated by Dr. Sebastian Joseph, a distinguished film historian and head of the Division of Environmental History and Anthropocene Studies at TIES. In his inaugural address, Dr. Sebastian highlighted the documentary's significance, its vision, and the impactful work of Mr. Jim Merkel and his team.
Following the screening, attendees had the unique opportunity to meet and interact with Mr. Jim Merkel, who shared behind-the-scenes insights and stories about the film's production. His perspectives on sustainable living and ecological responsibility resonated deeply, sparking a lively discussion on practical steps for environmental conservation.
Organized as part of TIES' commitment to environmental education and community engagement, this event underscored the role of films in raising awareness about sustainability and ecological interdependence.
