To cultivate a comprehensive understanding of technical fundamentals and advanced skills, educational projects and dissertations have become essential in today's academic landscape. These endeavors not only enhance knowledge but also foster an open-minded approach to learning.
Project-based courses are particularly valuable, as they enable students to deeply appreciate knowledge by tackling real-world challenges. On September 24, 2024, the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) organized a one-day workshop focused on student projects, drawing participants from esteemed institutions.
The participating colleges included St Xavier's College, Vaikom; SN College, Cherthala; Baselius College, Kottayam; Christian College, Chengannur; BCM College, Kottayam; and St Thomas College, Pala. Undergraduate and postgraduate students from Botany and Zoology departments engaged in this enriching experience, which promoted collaborative learning and diversity. 53 students attended the programme.
The workshop's primary objective was to equip students to undertake their own projects, which is mandatory according to their curriculum, and to develop a solid understanding of the scientific method. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Punnen Kurian, a research guide at TIES with 33 years of experience in research and teaching, participants explored the intricacies of selecting topics, setting objectives, research methodology, and project development. Additionally, the training involved field-level estimation techniques, such as quadrat studies, line transect studies, and other practical approaches to ecological data collection and analysis.
By going beyond mere project completion, this workshop empowered students with vital skills, paving the way for a deeper understanding of ecological sciences.
