2024-09-27

In today’s academic environment, project-based learning has become a crucial part of education, providing a deeper understanding of both fundamental and advanced concepts while promoting an open-minded approach to research. Recognizing this, the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) hosted a one-day workshop on September 27, 2024, aimed at developing research skills for students engaged in project work.

The workshop attracted participants from several esteemed institutions, including St Teresas's College, Ernakulam; MES College, Nedumkandam; Baselius College, Kottayam; CMS College, Kottayam; UC College, Aluva; and Henry Baker College, Melukavu. The workshop which contained 4 technical sessions was attended by 63 undergraduate and postgraduate students from the History, English & Political Science departments of these colleges.

The primary aim of the workshop was to equip students with the necessary skills to undertake independent projects, as mandated by their curriculum, while establishing a strong foundation in the research process. Under the guidance of Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Head of the Division of Environmental History and Anthropocene Studies, TIES and Dr. Punnen Secretary, TIES, students explored essential aspects of research, including topic selection, objective setting, research methodologies, and project development.

The training also included hands-on sessions on various research techniques relevant to history students, equipping them with practical skills for data collection and analysis. This workshop went beyond helping students complete their projects; it empowered them with essential research abilities, contributing to a deeper appreciation and understanding of historical studies.
