TIES Hosts Educational Engagement and Field Visit on Flood Disaster Management for URC Ernakulam Students

2025-04-11

TIES organized a one-day Educational Engagement and Field Visit Programme focused on flood disaster management and ecological resilience for 27 students from seven schools under Urban Resource Centres (URC), Ernakulam, Samagra Shiksha Kerala. This initiative provided an immersive learning experience on climate-responsive environmental practices and community-based disaster preparedness.

Under the leadership of Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, students explored the interlinkages between biodiversity conservation and flood resilience, gaining insight into how ecosystems like wetlands and forests act as natural buffers against floods. Dr. Kurian emphasized the urgency of climate change adaptation, particularly in urban flood-prone regions.

A key highlight of the day was an engaging session on the “Social Lesson of Water” led by Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Head of Environmental History and Anthropocene Studies, TIES. The session delved into the historical and social dimensions of water use, the human impact on hydrological systems, and the role of traditional knowledge in mitigating water-related disasters.

The programme also featured a Nature Walk led by Mr. Sarath Babu N B, Nature Education Officer at TIES. Students observed native plant species and ecological features that contribute to flood control and water retention. The activity underscored the value of landscape-based disaster mitigation through conservation of biodiversity.

In a Bio-Waste Management Training session conducted by Ms. Anoopa Mathews, Public Relations Officer, TIES, students learned about sustainable waste disposal techniques that prevent clogging of drainage systems during floods and eco-friendly architecture. Hands-on demonstrations included Vermicomposting, Kamba compost, Pot compost, Pipe compost, and the use of biogas plants, all aimed at promoting flood-resilient waste practices at the household level.

Another significant component was a Water Quality Analysis Workshop, where students were trained to test and assess water quality parameters. This session highlighted the importance of clean water access during and after flood events and encouraged youth-led water stewardship.

The programme was coordinated by Mr. Abdul Shukkur V P, Project Co-ordinator, along with Ms. Mercy N J, Ms. Rexy Luiz, Ms. Liya Joy, Ms. Deepthi M S, Ms. Arya Ashok, from URC, Ernakulam; Ms. Aishwarya Menon (CUSAT); Ms. Abhirami K P, Ms. Priyanka, and Mr. Jijomon P P from TIES.

This initiative strengthened students’ understanding of ecological approaches to flood disaster management and empowered them to become responsible advocates for environmental resilience in their communities. TIES remains committed to fostering youth engagement in climate action and sustainable development through experiential learning.
