TIES Hosts Training on Apiculture to Promote Community Engagement and Sustainability

2024-12-14

As part of its capacity-building initiatives, the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) conducted a one-day training program on apiculture, emphasizing its significance in today’s world. The event sought to raise awareness about the crucial role of honey bees in pollination and their alarming decline due to escalating pollution—a crisis with far-reaching implications for biodiversity and humanity.

Dr. Punnen Kurian opened the session with an engaging introduction to honey bees, highlighting their ecological importance. Mr. Sarath Babu NB, Nature Education Officer at TIES, enriched the training with live videos and visuals, demonstrating various aspects of apiculture, including hive management, pest control, honey harvesting, colony division, and other basics. Participants also had the opportunity to gain practical experience by working directly with bee colonies under expert guidance, which includes colony division, hive management, etc.

To further encourage sustainable practices, attendees were granted membership to the TIES Apiculture Club, providing them with ongoing access to resources, networking, and learning opportunities. This initiative aims to nurture a community of apiculture enthusiasts committed to ecological preservation and sustainable development. The training was attended by 32 participants.
