The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with a meaningful tree-planting programme, reaffirming its commitment to biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration. The event reflected the global theme "Inspired by Nature, For Climate Change, For Our Future", emphasizing the vital role of nature in addressing environmental challenges and securing a sustainable future.
As part of the celebration, the
TIES family planted a sapling of Vatica chinensis (Adakkapine), a
Critically Endangered tree species native to the Western Ghats. The tree was planted by Omana Sreedharan, Senior staff of TIES
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, emphasized the importance of restoring and conserving natural ecosystems before they are irreversibly degraded. He highlighted that protecting natural forests is essential for biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
The occasion provided an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and commitments towards environmental conservation. Anju, Lab In-Charge, shared her personal experience of planting a tree on her birthday and inspired others to adopt the same practice as a meaningful way to celebrate life while giving back to nature. Suhana, Project Officer at TIES from Lakshadweep, reflected on her long-standing connection with tree planting since her school days and expressed her happiness in continuing the practice through her work at TIES. Ananya, Project Manager at TIES, how planting trees from a young age had shaped their appreciation for nature and encouraged everyone to continue nurturing this habit throughout the year . Aleena, TIES intern, from Christ University, Bangaluru stressed that tree planting should become a lifelong habit rather than an activity confined to a single day of celebration.
The gathering also highlighted the
importance of adopting environmentally responsible lifestyle choices and
integrating sustainable practices into daily life.
On this special occasion, the TIES
family collectively pledged to embrace lifestyle habits that support
environmental conservation and sustainability. The celebration served as a
reminder that every individual action, no matter how small, can contribute to
protecting nature and building a healthier, greener future for generations to
come.
"Let every sapling planted
today grow into a legacy of hope for tomorrow."
