In a proactive step toward promoting ecological awareness and sustainable rural livelihoods, the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) conducted a comprehensive one-day training program focused on apiculture. The workshop emphasized the critical role of honey bees in supporting biodiversity and food security, while addressing the growing concerns over their population decline due to environmental pollution.
The training commenced with Dr. Punnen Kurian setting the context through a compelling introduction on the ecological significance of honey bees and their indispensable role in natural systems. The session continued under the guidance of Mr. Sarath Babu NB, Nature Education Officer at TIES, who brought the subject to life through engaging visuals and live demonstrations. Topics covered included hive setup, colony division, pest control, honey extraction, and the fundamentals of beekeeping.
Participants were also offered immersive, hands-on experience with bee colonies, gaining confidence and skills essential for practicing apiculture independently. The interactive format ensured a deeper understanding of beekeeping as both a conservation tool and a sustainable income-generating activity.
At the close of the session, all attendees were welcomed into the TIES Apiculture Club, a growing network of eco-conscious individuals dedicated to supporting pollinator health and ecological resilience. The training drew participation from 16 individuals, each now better equipped to contribute to pollinator conservation and community-based sustainability initiatives. All the participants were awarded with certificates and a bottle of honey.
