TIES Unveils New Munnar Project Office Launches Ambitious Initiative for Freshwater Ecosystem Conservation

In a significant development, TIES inaugurated a new project office in Munnar as a pivotal component of the TIES-IUCN Project. Dr. Abraham Smauel K, President of TIES and Principal Investigator, led the inauguration ceremony. The event witnessed the active participation of key figures including Dr. Punnen Kurian, Project Lead; Sarath Babu N B, Project Coordinator; Nihal Hussain TP, Praful V Panicker, Project Officers; and Bechu Punnen Abraham, Project Assistant. Forester Madhu, representing the Kerala State Forest Department, and Prasad G, the working plan officer in Munnar, played vital roles as well.

 

The project, titled "Protection of Fresh Water Ecosystems for the Conservation of Threatened Species in Munnar, Western Ghats, India," is geared towards monitoring and enhancing the quality of freshwater habitats. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The overarching goal is to conserve threatened species in the Munnar Landscape within the Southern Western Ghats of Kerala, India. The project entails conducting seasonal assessments and monitoring the population of threatened species across Munnar Territorial divisions, with a keen focus on assessing the water quality of freshwater ecosystems in the Munnar landscape. Additionally, a comprehensive population density study of odonates and fishes will be conducted in the designated study area.
