Understanding tree biodiversity is vital for ecosystem conservation and climate resilience, especially in today’s rapidly changing environment. Trees play a critical role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide, regulating temperature, and supporting biodiversity. Recognizing this, the Department of Botany at K E College, Mannanam, in partnership with TIES, organized a Tree Identification Workshop to equip botany students with practical skills in species identification and ecological awareness. Led by Mr. Sarath Babu N B, Nature Education Officer at TIES, the workshop provided 25 botany students with hands-on learning, focusing on identifying native tree species and understanding their significant role in ecosystem health and climate stability.
Throughout the session, participants explored native trees, studied essential characteristics for species identification, and learned how each species contributes to carbon storage and ecosystem resilience. This workshop underscores TIES’ commitment to fostering environmental awareness and practical knowledge among students, preparing future generations to contribute actively to ecological conservation and climate action. To enhance this initiative, QR-coded boards will be placed on the trees throughout the K E College campus, providing accessible information on each species and fostering a long-term resource for learning and conservation.
