In celebration of World Frog Day 2025, the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) organized a special webinar highlighting the importance of amphibian conservation. The session brought together researchers, conservationists, and students to discuss the ecological significance of frogs and the challenges threatening their survival.
Titled Why Frogs Are Important, the webinar was led by Dr. Sujith V. Gopalan, a Herpetologist, Conservation Biologist, and TIES Consultant. He elaborated on the role of frogs as bioindicators of environmental health, emphasizing the impacts of habitat destruction, climate change, and pollution on amphibian populations. He also provided insights into various frog taxa, their unique characteristics, and life cycles.
Additionally, TIES Project Staff Mr. Nidhichand K P and Ms. Cimila Sibichen presented an overview of the frogs of Munnar, addressing the threats and challenges these amphibians face in the region.
TIES remains committed to fostering awareness and action for biodiversity conservation through such initiatives. Stay connected for more programs aimed at protecting our planet’s fragile ecosystems.
This webinar was part of TIES' ongoing project, "Development of Bioacoustics Tools for Monitoring Amphibian Diversity in the Munnar Landscape, Western Ghats, India," funded by the Centre for Wildlife Studies under the Wild Incubator Tech Program. The project is being conducted in collaboration with the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, USA, and Biometrio.earth, Germany.
