Whispers of Wings: Exploring Birds at Amayannoor

2025-09-25

The Wings of Awareness project, initiated by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) conceived and supported by Buimerc India Foundation, organized a bird watching session for the students of Amayannoor High School. The programme, designed to kindle curiosity about nature, offered the students a first-hand learning experience in observing birds within their natural habitats. The project will be implemented across 20 schools in Kottayam District, engaging around 1,000 students and 60 teachers.

The session took place in the scenic surroundings of Parapuram, Amayannoor, with selected students and teacher coordinators of the programme taking part. Their enthusiasm and cooperation made the activity both vibrant and engaging.

The event opened with a detailed orientation by Mr. Ajayan Kumar M.N, Ornithology Expert at TIES. He spoke to the students about the ethics of bird watching, field discipline, and practical tips for identification, setting the tone for a responsible and enjoyable observation exercise. This was followed by a live demonstration by Ms. Suhaana, Project Officer of Wings of Awareness, who introduced the participants to the CROW(Children's Resources for Ornithology and Wilderness) app. She explained how the app could be used to log bird sightings, transforming each observation into valuable data for conservation.

As the group moved around the wetland-rich areas, nearly 25 species of birds were spotted. Among them were striking wetland and woodland species such as the Little Egret, Black Ibis, Large Egret, Black-rumped Flameback, Ashy Woodswallow, and Little Cormorant. The students proved to be quick learners, showing sharp observational skills and eagerness to engage with the trainers’ questions.

Overall, the bird watching activity at Amayannoor High School was a memorable success. It not only introduced the students to a wide variety of bird species but also encouraged them to view nature with renewed appreciation and responsibility.

The programme was coordinated by Megha M.M ,Communication Officer, TIES.
