A specialized workshop aimed at empowering beekeepers concluded recently, equipping participants with modern techniques in honey processing, value addition, and hands-on experience. The two-day event was organized by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) as part of its “Bees for Life” project, in collaboration with the Keystone Foundation from Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu.
The workshop brought together 24 beekeeper trainees from Tamil Nadu and Nilambur, for whom honey harvesting is a source of livelihood. Training sessions were held at the TIES main campus in Velloor, Kottayam.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Subash K B, Assistant Conservator of Forests for the Social Forestry Division, Kottayam, highlighted the indispensable role of honey bees in the ecosystem. He emphasized their importance as critical pollinators essential for maintaining biodiversity, ensuring agricultural productivity, and securing the food supply.
The first day of the workshop combined theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations. Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, delivered an engaging presentation on the ecological and economic benefits of apiculture. Mr. Sarath Babu N B, Nature Education Officer, led a hands-on session in colony management, providing participants with practical experience in colony division. The day concluded with an introduction to basic laboratory analysis for honey quality by Ms. Arya Shaji, Project Assistant, and Ms. Gopika Gopakumar, Lab Assistant.
On the second day, the focus shifted to the commercial applications of honey and its byproducts. Participants learned advanced techniques in honey processing and storage, emphasizing quality control through proper filtering and hygienic practices.
They gained hands-on experience in producing value-added product from honey and beeswax. They also received detailed guidance on preparation methods and correct proportions for products such as lip balm, body balm, soap, and face packs, equipping them with valuable skills to enhance their livelihoods.
