Future Naturalists Take Flight at TIES Junior Naturalist Programme

The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) successfully organized and concluded Junior Naturalist Certificate Course, with 16 students successfully completing the programme and earning certification as junior naturalists. The initiative was designed to foster environmental awareness, scientific curiosity, and a deeper understanding of biodiversity among young learners.

The certificate course offered participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with nature through a series of interactive learning sessions, field-based observations, conservation activities, and guided explorations. The programme aimed to equip students with essential knowledge of ecology and biodiversity while nurturing a sense of environmental responsibility and sustainable living practices.

The valedictory function and certificate distribution ceremony were graced by Sri. Praful Agarwal, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Kottayam, who attended the programme as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized the importance of environmental education at an early age and highlighted the role of young individuals in promoting conservation and ecological sustainability in society. 

Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, appreciated the dedication and active participation of the students throughout the programme. He noted that initiatives such as the Junior Naturalist Certificate Course play a significant role in shaping environmentally conscious citizens who can contribute meaningfully to conservation efforts in the future.

The training sessions covered a broad spectrum of topics related to nature and conservation, including biodiversity conservation principles; medicinal plants and their uses; eco-games and environmental awareness activities; and the study of dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, birds, freshwater fishes, snakes, mushroom cultivation, and amphibians. These sessions encouraged participants to develop keen observational skills and gain hands-on exposure to the natural world.

The sessions were conducted by an experienced team of resource persons and subject experts, including Dr. Punnen Kurian, Dr. Nelson P Abraham,Dr. Abraham Samuel K, Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Dr. Bindhu B. K, Mr. Sujith V Gopalan., Mr. Sarath Babu N.B., and Ms. Raimol Thomas. Their expert guidance and practical approach enriched the learning experience and ensured the successful completion of the programme.

Through programmes such as the Junior Naturalist Certificate Course, TIES continues its commitment to promoting environmental education and strengthening grassroots conservation awareness among the younger generation.
