Kottayam Urban Bird Survey 2025: The Return of the Nestling Colonies

2025-04-26

The urban bird diversity of Kottayam has shown a slight but encouraging increase, according to the 2025 Kottayam Urban Bird Survey organized by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES). This year’s survey recorded 47 species of birds, compared to 40 species documented last year.

Exciting new sightings included the Oriental Honey Buzzard and the Plum-headed Parakeet, both species rarely observed in urban settings.

A significant highlight was the remarkable recovery of the bird nestling colonies at Nagampadam Stadium. Compared to last year’s finding of fewer than 100 nests across four trees, this year the survey documented around 600 nests across nine trees. Species such as the Oriental Darter, Little Cormorant, and Indian Cormorant were found actively nesting. Increased community support from local businesses and residents has been a key factor in this resurgence.

Among the most commonly observed birds were the White-cheeked Barbet, Common Myna, Racket-tailed Drongo, Black Drongo, Rock Pigeon, and various crows. Waterbirds such as the Purple Heron, Oriental Darter, and Grey-headed Swamphen were also recorded.

The survey covered in five sectors for systematic coverage. The CMS College Campus recorded the highest bird diversity, followed by the Eerayil Kadavu area. Other important survey sites included the Nagampadam Stadium surroundings, Collectorate, and the PWD Rest House.

The survey was led by a dedicated team including Dr. Punnen Kurian, Tony Antony, Ajayakumar M.N., Shiby Mosses, Lekha Susan Jacob, Bindu K.B., Sarath Babu N.B., Anoopa Mathews, Jyothilakshmi P., Amalson Jose, Antony Sony, Milu George, Aparna K.V., and Anjitha P., with the active participation of around forty birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Birds play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by aiding in seed dispersal, pollination, and pest control. Their presence is also a valuable indicator of the overall health of the environment.
