"It was a wonderful experience and a rare opportunity for my friends and me," shared Fiza Siyad, a student participant. "I’ve now learned the English common names of almost 19 birds, and after this session, I even started keeping a birdwatching diary to note down my daily observations."
This inspiring moment unfolded as part of "Wings of Awareness"—the collaborative environmental conservation initiative led by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) and Buimerc India Foundation.
An eager group of 50 students from MMMUM UPS Karakkad stepped outdoors to participate in a hands-on avian survey and biodiversity workshop. Expert Ornithologist Ajaya Kumara M. N. guided the young naturalists through field observation techniques, demonstrating how to track flight patterns, distinguish physical markings, and identify local bird species by their calls.
To build practical skills in modern conservation science, TIES Project Officer Arathi Sasidharan conducted a live demonstration of the CROW App. Students were guided through logging real-time species sightings, empowering them to actively record field data as student citizen scientists contributing to regional biodiversity mapping.
The expedition allowed students to observe and catalog 19 bird species in their local environment, deepening their understanding of nature and inspiring a lifelong curiosity about wildlife.
The field program was successfully coordinated with the active leadership and support of accompanying teachers Muhammad Safeer, Safna Khalid, Ashitha, Sajna, and Yadu, who assisted in guiding the students throughout the session. By connecting classroom concepts with outdoor discovery, the initiative fostered strong environmental consciousness and hands-on conservation habits among the young participants.
