St. Aloysius College: Pioneering Sustainability with International Green Audit Accreditation

2024-12-18

St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, Thrissur, has achieved a landmark distinction by becoming the second college in Kerala to earn international accreditation for Green Audit. This recognition highlights the college’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The Green Audit meticulously evaluated the college’s Environment Management System (EMS), Energy Management System (EnMS), Water Efficiency Management System (WEMS), Campus Biodiversity Management System (CBMS), Waste Management System (WMS), Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHS), and Carbon Footprint (CF). These systems, implemented in line with ISO standards, reflect the college's forward-thinking approach to sustainability. The achievement also marks St. Aloysius College as a carbon-neutral campus, with special recognition for its exemplary health and safety management practices.

The audit process, conducted for the first time at such a comprehensive level, involved certified internal auditors identifying and rectifying non-conformities before the external audit. The final assessment was carried out by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), an ISO accreditation body, culminating in the issuance of an ISO-compliant certificate within a remarkable three-month timeline.

The certification ceremony took place on December 17, 2024, at the college’s Seminar Hall, with Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, presenting the Green Audit Certificate, Report, and Manual of Documented Information to Dr. Chacko Jose, Principal of St. Aloysius College. The event commenced with a welcome address by Shri. Jain Therattil, Green Audit Coordinator, followed by remarks from Fr. Thomas Chakkramakkil, College Manager, and Fr. Arun Jose K. CMI, Administrator.

Coordinators from various systems shared their experiences and insights, including Shri. Jain Therattil (EMS), Ms. Umadevi P. (WMS), Dr. Anju Elsa Tom (EnMS), Dr. Litty (CBMS), Ms. Abhirami (WEMS), and Ms. Rajitha A. G. (OHS). The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Vidya C. Nair.

Distinguished attendees from TIES included Ms. Abhirami K. P., Project Manager, and Ms. Megha Babu, Intern. This milestone reaffirms St. Aloysius College’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its role as a leader in fostering a greener future.
