2025-01-21

A training program on Sustainable Engineering was conducted for the students of Saintgits College of Engineering (Autonomous), Kottayam. The program aimed to introduce the concept of sustainability and its significance in engineering, provide practical insights into sustainable practices, and promote interactive learning through campus walks and group activities. The training commenced with an orientation session on the concept of sustainability by Dr. Punnen Kurian, Secretary of TIES, who emphasized the critical role of engineers in addressing environmental challenges and integrating sustainability into infrastructure and mechanical systems. This was followed by a technical session led by Dr. Bindhu B K, Head of the Division of Environmental Engineering at TIES, where she discussed green building techniques, renewable energy integration, and waste management strategies. Participants then engaged in campus walks, observing various sustainable practices, including waste management, local biodiversity conservation, rainwater harvesting, eco-friendly infrastructure, and laboratory analysis techniques. Students were also assigned tasks to identify and brainstorm sustainable practices and suggestions in various aspects at TIES like biodiversity, waste management, energy conservation, water conservation, architecture and innovation ideas. The day concluded with group presentations, where six groups shared their findings.

The training enhanced students' knowledge of sustainability, provided hands-on learning experiences, and fostered collaboration and communication skills. Participants appreciated the practical and interactive approach, finding the sessions both insightful and inspiring. The program successfully achieved its objectives of raising awareness and shaping environmentally conscious engineers capable of contributing to a sustainable future. The training was attended by 65 students from the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments and was coordinated by Ms. Revathi K S, Ms. Nekha Jose, Mr. Varun Mathew Idicula, and Mr. Basil George Thomas, assistant professors from Saintgits College of Engineering, along with Mr. Sarath Babu, Ms. Anju Ajikumar, Ms. Abhirami K P, Mr. Jijomon P P, Ms. Anoopa Mathews, Ms. Lijitha, and Mr. Jebin K Geemon.
