2024-10-03

In a significant move to foster environmental awareness and promote biodiversity, the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) in collaboration with Kottayam Public Library inaugurated the "TREE Labelling" project under the initiative titled TREES (Assessing Biodiversity and Cultivating Environmental Awareness through Tree Labelling at Kottayam Public Library).

The event, held on October 3, 2024, was presided over by Mr. Rajesh M., IFS, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Kottayam, who emphasized the importance of conserving local biodiversity and the role public institutions like libraries can play in educating citizens. Mr. Abraham Itticheria, the President of the library, delivered an inspiring address underscoring the need to engage the community in environmental conservation efforts.

Dr. Punnen Kurian, the Secretary of TIES, presented the project report, highlighting the key objectives of the initiative. The program aims to label trees around the library premises, providing detailed information on species, thereby enhancing public awareness of the region’s rich flora. The labels will include scientific names, local names, and ecological significance of each tree, encouraging visitors to learn about the environment and promoting sustainable living practices.

The event saw the participation of environmentalists, local residents, and students who expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative. It marks a crucial step in expanding the community’s involvement in biodiversity conservation, with TIES playing a pivotal role in driving such impactful projects.
