Wetlands in Bloom: Chinmaya Vidyalaya Students Explore the Avian Wealth of Malarikkal

2026-10-16

"This program has been a completely new experience for both our children and teachers," shared accompanying teacher Sreela, reflecting on the immersive outdoor excursion. Expressing her appreciation, she noted that while they previously knew a few birds existed around them, discovering such a vast multitude of species right in their local landscape was truly eye-opening and wonderful.

This engaging exploration took place under "Wings of Awareness"—a joint environmental education and conservation program organized by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) and Buimerc India Foundation.

A dedicated group of 31 students from Chinmaya Vidyalaya ventured into the expansive wetland and paddy landscapes of Malarikkal, Kottayam, to conduct a comprehensive field birdwatching survey. Expert Ornithologist Sarath Babu led the young participants through the terrain, imparting valuable field knowledge on avian observation techniques, habitat behavior, and species identification.

To combine outdoor ecology with modern technology, TIES Project Officer Arathi Sasidharan conducted an interactive demonstration of the CROW App. Students received practical training on recording real-time field data digitally, empowering them to actively contribute sighting records as student citizen scientists for regional conservation mapping.

The survey across the scenic wetlands of Malarikkal yielded a remarkable count of 22 bird species. Among these, the sighting of large numbers of Glossy Ibis left the students filled with awe and wonder as they observed the vibrant flocks inhabiting the open waters.

The educational expedition was smoothly coordinated with the dedicated support of accompanying teachers Remya CM and Sreela. By bridging classroom learning with direct exposure to rich natural ecosystems, the program successfully inspired a deep appreciation for local biodiversity and environmental stewardship among the students.
