Wings Take Flight: Celebrating the Journey of Young Birdwatchers at Amayannoor

The valedictory function of the Wings of Awareness programme was conducted at Amayannoor High School, marking the culmination of the environmental learning initiative carried out among the students. Wings of Awareness is an environmental education programme implemented by the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) with the support of Buimerc India Foundation. The initiative focuses on encouraging students to develop a deeper understanding of nature through bird watching, observation of local ecosystems, and biodiversity documentation.

The programme began on a serene note with a soulful prayer rendered by the school choir, setting a meaningful tone for the gathering. This was followed by the welcome address delivered by the Teacher Coordinator, Mr. Thomas K. Eravikulangara, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries, the TIES team members, teachers, and students present at the function.

The inaugural address was delivered by the School Manager, Mr. A. Abraham, who appreciated the relevance of such environmental initiatives in schools. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of instilling ecological values in young learners and commended the programme for fostering curiosity and environmental awareness among students.

As part of the ceremony, the school memento was formally handed over by Mr. Ajaya Kumar M.N, bird-watching expert and member of the TIES team. Following this, he delivered the valedictory address, reflecting on the impact the programme had created among participating students. He encouraged them to remain observant of nature and to continue exploring the natural world as a lifelong learning journey.

Following the address, certificates were distributed to the top-performing students- Adithya Saji and Hariprabha Hari, by Mr. Ajaya Kumar M.N, recognizing their active participation and achievements in the programme. Certificates of appreciation for the teacher coordinators were jointly handed over by the School Manager, Mr. A. Abraham, and Ms. Naomi Mair of the TIES team, acknowledging their dedicated support in successfully implementing the activities at the school.

The programme then moved into a student experience-sharing session, where several students came forward to reflect on their journey through the project. They shared how the activities helped them observe birds more closely and develop a stronger connection with nature.

This was followed by a felicitation speech delivered by Ms. Suhaana, Project Officer of the Wings of Awareness programme. In her address, she expressed sincere gratitude to the school management, teachers, and students for their wholehearted cooperation. She also highlighted the special significance of Amayannoor High School as the first school to collaborate with the project, acknowledging the institution’s early support in making the initiative a success.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Headmistress, Mrs. Nisha Elias, who expressed appreciation to the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES), Buimerc India Foundation, the school management, teachers, and students for their collective efforts in making the programme and its valedictory function a memorable and meaningful event.
