Suchitwa Mission organized a two-day workshop on Curriculum Development for Waste Management in Higher Education Programs at Kerala Craft Village, Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram, on August 8-9, 2024. Sri U.V. Jose IAS, Executive Director of Suchitwa Mission, delivered the keynote address and provided an orientation on the program. He described the 1,034 local bodies in the state as live laboratories for internships, projects, and field visits for higher education institutions. Dr. Joy Elamon, former Director General of KILA, set the context for the workshop through a short presentation. Sri N. Jagjeevan of Malinya Muktha Navakeralam explained the progress achieved so far and shared the experiences of the internship program at Suchitwa Keralam. Dr. Punnen Kurian, Director of TIES, presented an analysis of the current syllabi on waste management in Indian institutions. Dr. Ranjith Subash, Research Officer at SCERT, Kerala, outlined the syllabi developed this year for school curricula on waste management. Dr. Sudheendran K., Research Officer at the Kerala State Higher Education Council, outlined the scope of involving waste management components in the FYUG syllabus. Mr. Rohit Joseph, Director of TAGS Forum, organized group discussion sessions. Around 35 experts from 13 universities and 7 research organizations in Kerala participated in the workshop. The outcomes of the workshop included a general syllabus on waste management for all academic institutions in Kerala, a suitable teaching-learning evaluation system, and internship and project opportunities.
